About the work

This painting took me 9 months to complete! Last September (2021) we went camping at Mt. Madonna and this redwood fairy circle was located on our campsite.

According to science, a fairy ring/circle is a a group of redwood trees growing in a circle, usually around the stump of an old-growth tree. After being burnt or cut down, a new generation of trees sprout from the roots of the fallen redwood, often creating a near-perfect circle or ring.

The two stumps in the foreground of this painting are the two trees that burnt down and the new redwoods are the new growth from the stumps. We called them the Lolo and Lola stumps (Grandfather and Grandmother in Tagalog) and the new growth were the “children” that were born from the grandparent trees.

We enjoyed playing inside the redwood fairy circle. It is a wonderful memory which my kids still talk about today. Redwoods are magical trees!
