A Celebration of Beauty
One day I was contacted by an amateur model asking if I would be interested in photographing her. I didn't think much of the photos in her limited portfolio, but I kept thinking "There's something here."
A couple of days later prior to a photoshoot in my studio I asked my make-up artist what she thought of this model. She was unimpressed and dismissed her. But I kept thinking, "There's something here."
A few months later I had an idea for a photoshoot that I thought she might be suited for. We ended up doing one outdoor shoot and two in studio. After our third collaboration she told me that working with me had increased her self-confidence and "I don't feel so ugly anymore."
To me that was worth more than any photograph. Many photographers take the position that photoshoots need to be impersonal to be professional. I think that's a mistake. There is so much abuse in the industry that stems, I feel, from models being treated like objects rather than people. I want my work to leave the model feeling beautiful and confident and with a sense of her potential.
