One of Kweli's cubs follows Kweli as she heads off to hunt at sunset.

Evening is the worst time for Kweli and her cubs to be hunting. They lose a lot of kills to Hyena, and with lions becoming more active around this time too, it makes holding onto the kill even more challenging. Having been unsuccessful the past two days, Kweli has no choice but to keep up the hunt.

I saw Kweli regularly during the month I spent photographing in the Maasai Mara. This photo was taken during a three day stint that I spent almost exclusively following Kweli and her cubs, aiming to capture a series of photographs that encapsulate the spirit of her dedication to her cubs.

This photograph is part of the ‘Individuals’ collection, from Matthew’s solo exhibition in London. The ‘Individuals’ collection focuses on telling the stories of the animals Matthew has spent time with in the Maasai Mara. Each character has their own personal story, unique history, and uncertain future. They have distinctive personalities, close bonds, feared enemies, and emotions as strong as your own. Visiting the same individuals every single day, Matthew gets to know his subjects on a deeply personal level. By highlighting these personal stories, showing animals to be emotional individuals rather than just an anonymous statistic in a wider population, Matthew hopes to promote a desire to protect and care for this precious wildlife.
