About the work

Collage of fisherman's map dated 1968 with acrylic paint on acid-free tissue paper, mounted on the inside cover of a hardback book.

The map is of Edrachillis bay in Sutherland on the north-west coast of Scotland. The numbers appearing throughout the map relate to the depth at that point. The vertical line on the right is an oft-unfolded crease in the map. The pattern marks my love of the endless sight of the sea.

The collage has been treated to archival standards to preserve the colours of the paper. The book cover has been sealed with acid-free PVA and Golden Gac 100. The collage has been created on acid-free card to provide physical separation from the book cover itself. The paper has been coated on both sides with Golden soft gel medium and protected with a coat of Golden UV matte varnish.

The cover is from the 'The Ship Captain's Medical Guide' from 1967. The map looks like it was consulted frequently, and fortunately the book does not.
