The Namokar Mantra is a Jain prayer, also known as the Navkar Mantra or the Namaskar Mantra. It is one of the most significant and revered prayers in Jainism, recited by followers as an expression of reverence and devotion.
The mantra is composed of nine phrases, each representing a fundamental aspect of Jain philosophy and ethics. While there may be slight variations in pronunciation and wording across different Jain traditions and languages, the essence of the mantra remains consistent. Here is a typical rendition of the Namokar Mantra:
"Namo Arihantanam" - I bow down to the enlightened beings (Arihantas), who have attained omniscience and liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
"Namo Siddhanam" - I bow down to the liberated souls (Siddhas), who have achieved ultimate liberation and reside in a state of eternal bliss.
"Namo Ayariyanam" - I bow down to the spiritual teachers (Acharyas), who impart wisdom and guidance on the path of righteousness.
"Namo Uvajjhayanam" - I bow down to the spiritual leaders (Upadhyayas), who provide teachings and interpretations of Jain scriptures.
"Namo Loe Savva Sahunam" - I bow down to all the enlightened souls, regardless of their status, who serve as sources of inspiration and guidance.
"Eso Panch Namukkaro" - These five-fold salutations (to Arihantas, Siddhas, Acharyas, Upadhyayas, and all enlightened beings) constitute the essence of the mantra.
"Savva Pavappanasano" - This mantra is capable of destroying all sins and negative karmas.
"Mangalanan Cha Savvesim" - This mantra is auspicious and beneficial for all living beings.
"Padhamam Havai Mangalam" - This mantra is the foremost among all auspicious invocations.
The Namokar Mantra serves as a reminder of the Jain principles of humility, reverence for all life, and the pursuit of spiritual liberation. Reciting it with sincerity is believed to invoke blessings, purify the mind, and cultivate virtues such as compassion, non-violence, and detachment.
