One of Kito’s daughters climbs a dead tree for a better view of her surroundings.

The Marsh Pride are known for their playful and adventurous nature. This sub-adult female (one of Kito's two daughters) perfectly encapsulates this spirit and is invariably the one getting stuck up trees, playing with Lola's cubs, winding up hippos, and generally causing mischief. On this particular morning she seemed intent on climbing everything and anything she could find!

This photograph is part of the ‘Individuals’ collection, from Matthew’s solo exhibition in London. The ‘Individuals’ collection focuses on telling the stories of the animals Matthew has spent time with in the Maasai Mara. Each character has their own personal story, unique history, and uncertain future. They have distinctive personalities, close bonds, feared enemies, and emotions as strong as your own. Visiting the same individuals every single day, Matthew gets to know his subjects on a deeply personal level. By highlighting these personal stories, showing animals to be emotional individuals rather than just an anonymous statistic in a wider population, Matthew hopes to promote a desire to protect and care for this precious wildlife.
