Anita Thomas

Anita Thomas is an artist and photographer originally from Toronto and now living in Hamilton, Canada. A lifelong painter whose career has always been in the arts, she is a multi-disciplinary artist working in acrylic, cold wax with oils, encaustic, and photography.

Her education in art began early with special programs throughout childhood, Sheridan College for Fashion Technique and Design, and continues to this day through a great many workshops and courses both locally and online with some of the world’s best instructors.

“My work covers a range of mediums and styles but my favourite is encaustics. This ancient practice of painting with molten beeswax, tree resin, and raw pigments allows me to mix contrasting textures and techniques as I paint with the fire of my blowtorch. I have enjoyed working in encaustic since 2013. Every aspect of encaustics, from the process of making my own encaustic medium and paint to the many techniques that can be applied, is ooh so addictive. The alchemy of it all draws me in and satisfies me in so many ways. The possibilities are endless as you react to what happens within your control and also to that which is gifted to you serendipitously.”

Thomas’ award-winning photography and art are sold through specialty stores as well as online. She has participated in many juried group and solo exhibitions, arts festivals, and fundraising events including at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Dundas Valley School of Art, McMaster Innovation Park, Hamilton Public Library galleries, the Fieldcote Museum, and the Louvre in Paris, France.

Her work hangs in private collections and professional offices throughout Canada, the United States, France, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
