Education

1986 - 1989
Design & Illustration Degree at Wolverhampton University

Originally from Wakefield, in the Northern English county of West Yorkshire I have lived in Vancouver Canada since 1998. Up until then my studies included a 2 year Art Foundation course in my home town, followed by a 3 year degree in Design & Illustration from the University of Wolverhampton. After gaining these honours I headed straight to the 'Big Smoke' (London) to spread my artistic wings. There I worked in the field of advertising as a storyboard artist at some very exciting full service agencies as well as stand alone artistic studios filled with the craziest and most talented artists you could ever wish to meet. Every day brought a different creative challenge. Through the loud music and frenzied scratching of magic markers, pencils and brushes the deadline and the restless bike courier at the door waited for no one! Branching off on occasion as a comic book illustrator and album cover/poster artist for bands such as Marilyn Manson, Soundgarden, Courtney Love and Sting, my time in London fills my heart with happiness.

When an opportunity to live in Canada came along I jumped at the chance of something new and exciting. Promptly securing a job at video game giant EA (Electronic Arts) Sports as a concept artist on the Need For Speed franchise. The experience of working in this field amongst some of the most talented people I have ever met was a joy I will long remember. Other companies then sought my talents and I was able to move around and work on a number of different and thrilling genres within the video game world. The itch of change finally needed scratching and I decided to push out on my own to get my brushes wet in other areas. Along with freelance design & illustration projects I have been feverishly gathering an impressive catalog both in number and differing styles of small and large scale acrylic paintings. Popular subjects that flash beneath my brushes are the many impressive vistas of the beautiful city of Vancouver that I now call home.

Portraiture is also key to my work. Utilizing a keen eye for detail and love for capturing the sparkle in a person's eyes I revel in the challenge. Eyes are a key element in my artistic foray's. Eyes that look at you while you look at them seems like a logical and interesting connection that harkens back to my University thesis about the propaganda posters of old! Nothing can make you feel as alone as eyes that single you out in a crowd and shout, 'your country needs you!'

I am a passionate artist who believes that my constant practice of basic drawing and painting skills has honed an ability to translate the world into colorful artworks that hopefully captivate those that see them.

Years of practice does not make painting effortless, it just means you have more brushes to choose from!
