Mong Yen was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He came to Canada in 1980 as a refugee.
After years of learning English and working hard to adjust to a new life in Canada, Mong attended the University of Ottawa, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. After graduation he started working as an engineer for 8 years before he retired to become a stay-at-home dad, he enjoys spending time outdoors, he sketches and paints in his spare time.
Mong is mostly self-taught, continually learning mainly by studying the works of the masters, in particular the works of the great American artist Andrew Wyeth and New Zealand Artist Raymond Harris-Ching.
Mong has had a number of solo and group exhibitions in Canada and in the U.S. His paintings are in private collections in Canada, U.S. and Japan. Mong lives with his wife and two sons in Coquitlam, B.C.
