Donuts & Coffee is the original and inspiration for the Palms Tree collection. I began this series during a difficult emotional time when I was Living in Los Angeles. Watching these humble palms sway and remain powerful while relentlessly reaching skyward gave me comfort and encouragement. Spending many hours getting to know the palms of L.A., they have taken on human characteristics. They have become a part of my family, my friends. I enjoy their company.
Living among the man-made steel and concrete, the palm trees continue to dominate the frame of the image. They are sturdy and proud.
The warm light reflecting on the palms and the retro signage trigger different emotions for many. A summer holiday, perhaps a road-trip. I want to express the romance of the signage captured just at the edge of the frame. Nostalgia feels good, swells our hearts and takes us to a time we remember fondly.
Shot in camera, I use a yellow filter to cast the gauzy tint of nostalgia upon LA’s relentless and utopian blue sky.
This combination of analogue on-camera filtration, Photoshop and metallic quality paper all add to the surreal effect.
