Location: Slate Islands Provincial Park, Lake Superior, Ontario. Canada
Notes: Watercolour painting of rocks littered along the shoreline. This small archipelago in northern Lake Superior was formed by a massive meteorite impact 450 million years ago. The Slate Islands were designated a provincial park in 1985. It’s a non-operating park, which means it has no staffed facilities or activities. There is one dock, a warming shelter, four pit toilets, and five backcountry campsites. The islands, with their limited accessibility, are not slate; the rock is mainly of metamorphosed volcanic rocks over 2.7 billion years old. Also present are sedimentary rocks of the Rove and Gunflint formations, approximately 1.85-2.10 billion years old.
